How does coaching work in practice ?

The best way to understand and get a feel for coaching is to actually experience it first hand. Which is why Carpe Diem Coaching always offers a complimentary face to face introductory session beforehand. So as to enable you, the prospective client, to see what it looks like, hear how it sounds, get a feel for how it works. And then realise how it can assist you in your quest for excellence, help you better manage change and take that next big step forward.

The complimentary introductory session will then be followed by what is called an intake meeting. This normally last around two hours. Its purpose is to lay down the foundations of a coaching relationship and give the coach an opportunity to learn more about you and what it is you are looking to achieve. The coach will then suggest a program to suit your needs and articulate a proposal. This proposal, addressed directly to you, or to the Operational Development or HR officer within the company, as the case may be, will cover the coaching agreement, address issues of confidentiality, frequency and mode of coaching, venue and professional fees.

What is required for coaching to be of true benefit?

You, the client, simply need to meet two basic conditions. The first is that you are committed to making the change happen. The second is that you are willing to engage with yourself with candour to make change possible. No more, but also no less, is required.

How long does a coaching relationship typically last?

That depends very much on the issue(s) the client wishes to address. Typical coaching relations last an average of three months. Occasionally they can extend to a year or more, or alternatively maybe become more intermittent following an initial intensive period. Ultimately the decision rests with the client and depends on the nature and scope of his or her desired outcome.
